Types of Stamps

As with any other collectible,  there many different ways to collect stamps.  Here are 3 popular types of stamp that people enjoy collecting.

 

Traditional Stamps:

These are what most people will associate stamp collecting with. It’s what you stick on an envelope and use to get your letter across the country. They are the most popular of them all because they are the most widely known and in use today.

Revenue Stamps:

These stamps were used to collect fees or taxes starting in the 16th Century. They were used on all types of documents as well as on products such as medicine, tobacco and beer. They are found in a wide variety of sizes and are among some of the most beautiful of all stamps.

Covers:

A cover is an envelope or folded letter that has gone through the mail and will have cancelled stamps affixed. There are many ways in which covers are collected. These include first day covers, which feature a stamp on it first day of use, air mail covers, special delivery covers, military and naval covers, and many more. There are also stampless covers, which were used prior to the use of stamps and show an indication of postage having been paid or is due.
